The KBC National Student Media Awards (Smedias) celebrates the wealth of media talent present across all of Ireland’s third level education institutions. It offers a chance for young journalists, photographers, filmmakers, broadcasters and bloggers to make a name for themselves in the industry, and is judged by some of the most prominent figures in Irish media.

Last year’s judges included Fionan Sheehan, Editor of the Irish Independent, Lenny Abrahamson, Academy-Award nominated director and Cathy Fox, Executive Producer of the Late Late Show.

Interested in entering the 16th Annual Smedias? Here’s all you need to know:

PRE-REGISTRATION

Pre-registration is open now, and you can sign up here. Just fill in your name, what college you attend, contact details and tick all categories you plan to enter. You can click here to see a full list of last year’s categories.

ENTRIES OPEN

You can start sending in your Smedia entries from the 1st February 2016. We only accept hard copies of submissions. The cost of entering is €15 for your first entry, and then an additional €10 for every subsequent entry e.g. two entries will cost you €25. This fee is used to ensure the high standard of the Smedias ceremony can be maintained. The funds are used to cover a number of costs, such as
sorting and cataloging the entries, having them couriered to a shortlister and back, couriered to and from the judges, and more. Radio/Video/Websites/Newspaper/Magazine entries can take up to an hour each to go through, making the process very time consuming and expensive, but ensuring that the awards are given to those who deserve them most! It also ensures that we are not inundated with the random musings of every Tom, Dick, and Harry in Ireland. You’re not going to spend fifteen quid submitting any old rubbish!

Check out all of our entry guidelines here.

ENTRIES CLOSE

The closing date for Smedia entries is 3rd March 2016. Entries received after this date will not be accepted, so please make sure to have submissions in on time to avoid disappointment.

THE MAIN EVENT

This year’s fabulous award ceremony will take place a week earlier than last year, at the Aviva Stadium on the 7th April 2016, where many Irish media icons will be in attendance to present awards and mingle with the bright future of Ireland’s media industry.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
