New category at SMEDIAS 2026 puts Irish language content creation on the national stage

Údarás na Gaeltachta has announced a new award category at Ireland’s National Student Media Awards, SMEDIAS 2026, Irish Language Content Creator of the Year.  It is designed to celebrate the growing wave of young, digitally-native Irish language creators reshaping how Gaeilge is experienced online.

The Irish language is no longer confined to the classroom or the airwaves. Across TikTok, YouTube, Instagram and beyond, a new generation is building vibrant, engaged communities through Irish and Údarás na Gaeltachta wants to reward these creators.

The new award will recognise the student creator who has demonstrated the most sustained, innovative and high-quality commitment to Irish language content across any digital platform since February 2025. Open to all students based in Ireland, the category celebrates creativity, consistency and cultural pride.

Miriam Ní Néill, Enterprise and Employment Division, Údarás na Gaeltachta, put it plainly:

“Gen Z and Gen Alpha have turned away from traditional television. They are on YouTube and TikTok: creating, sharing and building communities through Irish. This award sends a clear message: Údarás na Gaeltachta sees you, supports you, and your work has real value.”

SMEDIAS is Ireland’s premier student media awards, celebrating excellence across print, radio, television, social media and film. For thousands of students across the country, a SMEDIAS nomination is a career-defining moment.
