The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has been confirmed as the sponsor of the Joe Drennan RSA Award for Journalism Relating to Road Safety at the National Student Media Awards 2026. RSA has supported the SMEDIAs for many years.

Named in memory of Joe Drennan, the award celebrates student journalism that shines a light on road safety issues. Joe, a former SMEDIA winner, was a talented young journalist whose work was defined by empathy, curiosity and a strong sense of social responsibility. He is remembered as someone deeply committed to telling stories that mattered.

The award recognises student journalists who produce thoughtful, well-researched work that informs public discussion and encourages greater awareness of road safety across Ireland.

The RSA’s continued involvement reflects its commitment to education, awareness and supporting the next generation of journalists reporting on issues of real public importance.

Last year’s award was won by John O’Connor, News Editor at the University Observer, University College Dublin, for his article exploring young people’s attitudes to road safety. His winning piece can be read here for inspiration:

The National Student Media Awards 2026 will take place this April, celebrating the best of student journalism and media from across Ireland’s third-level institutions.

Please note that applications close March 16th.
