We’ve officially made it through the 10 darkest weeks of the year and the brighter nights are finally resurfacing, what a time to celebrate!

This means no more waking up and getting home from college in the pitch black, and more opportunities to take part in outdoor activities.

Whether your New Year’s resolution was to spend more time outside, or you just want to take a break from college work, here are 5 hikes to try now the brighter evenings are upon us.

Glendalough White Route (The Spinc Loop), Co. Wicklow

Distance: 9.5km

Difficulty: Moderate

Time: 2.5-4 hours

Start point: National Park Information Office near the Upper Lake.

Benbulbin Loop, Co. Sligo

Distance: 5.5km

Difficulty: Easy

Time: 1-2 hours

Start point: Gortarowey Forest entrance car park

Djouce Mountain Loop (Vis White Hill), Co. Wicklow

Distance: 13km

Difficulty: Moderate

Time: 3-5 hours

Start point: Ballinastoe Wood car park

Cuilcagh Boardwalk, Co. Fermanagh

Distance: 11km

Difficulty: Hard

Time: 2-3 hours

Slieve Foye, Carlingford, Co. Louth
