It’s that time of year again when students start to get flooded with emails from their colleges. Make sure you’ve filled out this. Make sure you’ve filled out that.

One of the most important pieces of information you’ll get is information about choosing your modules. It’s really important to carefully select the classes you’re taking as these are what determine your GPA. Here are three tips to help you make the best choices.

Think About Your Future Career

Often students are studying broad degrees that don’t have a direct career path. It’s worth thinking about what modules could give you an advantage in your future career or an area you find interesting. For example, if you’re studying law but have an interest in digital roles see if media law is an option. If you’re studying English and want to be a journalist see if you can take any non fiction classes.

Review the Assessment Methods

Each module can have a different style of assessment. Think about your strengths and see what classes suit you best. If you struggle to write quickly then exam modules may not be the best choice. If you’re working during term you might just want to do one big piece of work instead of multiple assignments during the year.

Look Back at Previous Work

Sometimes you may have studied similar topics to what your modules are focusing on in other classes. If so, look back and review your grades and think about how much you enjoyed learning the information. If you scored high on a similar topic chances are you would enjoy a more in depth class on the subject.
