Calling all students! 2022 is here and applications for the Smedias will be opening soon. Now is the time to think about what you could create to be in a chance to win one of these prestigious awards.
What are the Smedias?
The Smedias (The National Student Media Awards) is a ceremony held every year to celebrate the best in Irish student media. Submissions are judged by people from the most influential platforms in the country such as The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, The Irish Examiner, TG4, RTÉ, Today FM and many more.
Judges & Presenters
To win one of these awards is a pleasure but to get a nomination is an achievement in itself. Previous winners and nominees have gone on to work for the likes of RTÉ, The Journal, Newstalk, Spin 1038, and The Irish Times.
Celebrity judges will also make an appearance on the night. Previous presenters of the awards include Liam Cunningham, Eileen Dunne, Blathnaid Ni Chofaig, Jedward, Roz Purcell and Daithí O’Shea.
Some of the categories that you can apply for include Journalist of the Year, Newspaper of the Year, Photographer of the Year, and Short Animation of the Year; but if you fancy yourself to be the next Will Goodbody, Waterfordwhispers, Teresa Mannion, or Blindboy Boat Club now is the time to think what you could write for our niche categories:
– Journalism relating to Science and Technology
– Journalism Relating to the Environment
– RSA Award for Journalism Relating to Road Safety
– Journalism relating to EU Affairs
We also have four categories in the Irish language; written, radio, TV and social media video!
Overall the night is a great opportunity to chat with some famous faces in Irish media and meet your future peers if we can come together next year. And If all goes well and you pick up a Smedia on the night you might not be able to pronounce it by the end!
Applications for the Smedias will open soon so be sure to follow our website, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for further updates!
