Homely pubs, festive markets, and all the wintry magic in between.

December has arrived. The mornings are frosty, and twinkling lights cover the houses, making it a multi-coloured dream. Wearing three layers of clothing to keep warm, December is the month to connect, reflect, and, most importantly, enjoy. Nothing beats the feeling of cosiness, warming your hands up with a scalding cup of tea, or settling into a small cosy pub with a crackling open fire. Ireland is filled with little spots that will warm your hands and heart.

Heading to Leinster, The Cobblestone Pub, Dublin: is vibrant and inviting, full of traditional music. It is a haven for music lovers! It feels like an escape to the country while still being in the city.
Further north in Ulster, in Donegal, Conway’s Pub in Ramelton: A charming Irish-style cottage. Rustic and homely, it exudes the cosiness of a small village, where tradition is preserved and quaint charm endures.

Over in Connacht, Matt Molloy’s Pub in Westport Town, Mayo: Famous for a reason, this intimate pub buzzes with lively music and conversation. With no televisions, it has preserved its traditional charm and spirit. Down in Munster O’Connor’s Traditional Pub, Killarney: A relaxing and lively pub with live music, cosy corners, and a welcoming warmth. With high bar chairs, framed photos, and memorabilia adorning the walls, it’s a true Irish pub full of character.

Ireland’s towns come alive with festive markets, from the well-known Dublin, Galway, and Belfast fairs to smaller village markets. Everywhere you go, you’ll find artisan crafts, food trucks and festive entertainment waiting to be discovered.

Leinster
YuleFest, Kilkenny: is a magical leap back into medieval times, set on castle grounds. Cosy, family-friendly and full of charm and plenty to see, from hand-made gifts to tasty treats. Opening hours: Saturday 11 am – 8 pm, Sunday 11 am – 6 pm. A special market will take place on Monday, 22nd and Tuesday, 23rd December, 11 am – 6 pm.

Ulster
Christmas Craft Market, Flowerfield Arts Centre, Derry: has gained a great reputation; it holds 35 independent vendors with gifts suitable for all budgets, from homeware to stationery, and there really is something for everyone! The market runs Monday – Saturday from 15 November to 23 December, 10 am – 4 pm, with opening hours on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 7-9 pm.

Connacht
Christmas at Bunratty and Folk Park, Clare: is set in the gorgeous Bunratty Village, with restaurants and pubs filled with great local hospitality, visit Santa and have a unique shopping experience, and get everything in one place! Events start at 9:30 up until 6 pm, from breakfast with Santa himself, to a dinner show.

Munster
Cork Christmas Markets, Emmet Place: transforms into its own Christmas village in the heart of the city. There’s plenty to choose from, incredible food, gifts and entertainment. The market opens on Thursdays from 12 pm to 8 pm, Fridays from 12 pm to 9 pm, Saturdays from 10 am to 9 pm, and on Sundays from 10 am to 8 pm.

Whether you’re chasing the craic of a busy city or tucking yourself into a tiny pub you stumble across by chance, winter in Ireland has a way of mesmerising you and maybe even slowing you down. It’s authentic, a little chaotic, full of heart, and it’s all waiting for you. So layer up and enjoy the season in whatever way feels right for you.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and happy holidays to those who celebrate. And if you don’t, I hope you have a beautiful, peaceful December. You deserve it!
