The Minutes competition

The Minutes play The Academy on Saturday February 11, with support from Leaders of Men. Tickets priced €12.50 are on sale now.

The Minutes have just put down a summer of gigging that would fit handsomely into any good rock and roll archive.

Having blown heads off audiences at festivals across Ireland and the UK including Reading and Leeds, Sea Sessions, Castlepalooza, Indiependence, Oxegen and Electric Picnic, and having packing The Workman’s Club to sweaty capacity for the launch of their critically acclaimed debut album Marcata, the guys have barely stopped to take a breath.

And they are not going to get the chance any time soon, as they tear around the country for some shows in Cork, Tullamore, Meath, Galway, Dundalk and Limerick and land to to blaze through a sold out show in Whelan’s on October 15th and it doesn’t stop there as the lads have just been announced as special guests of Flogging Molly on their 23-date European tour throughout the month of November.

With a long, thumping, rock-rolling career a sure bet for these three Dubliners, the achievements of the past few months feel like the tip of the iceberg. And now Minutes advocates are preparing themselves to share their favourite band with the masses, as The Minutes get set to launch their brand new single Heartbreaker on February 10th 2012, followed by their biggest headline performance to date in The Academy on February 11th.

Oxegen: It's amazing that three lads can make the amount of noise that the Minutes do. From the first track it's all guns blazing from the Dublin band, absorbing the energy of the crowd and making a huge stage their own’…ATL BBC NI.

Electric Picnic: ‘The songs are delivered with such flair and confidence that it’s impossible not to be sucked into the raw rockin’ energy that this band exude on stage’…State.ie

Topless Ukraine activist grabs Euro Cup

(Reuters) - A Ukrainian women's rights activist stripped to the waist and seized the Euro-2012 soccer trophy while it was on public display in Kiev on Saturday in a protest against the forthcoming month-long championship.

The young woman, 23-year-old Yulia Kovpachik, is a member of the Kiev-based Femen women's rights group which believes the Euro-2012 soccer tournament being played in Ukraine next month will encourage sex tourism.

Kovpachik strode up to the silver, 60 centimeter (two feet) high trophy, which was on display as a tourist attraction in an open air exhibition in central Kiev, ostensibly to be photographed alongside it like hundreds of other sightseers.

But she then pulled down her red T-shirt to reveal the words "Fuck Euro 2012" scrawled on her torso. As she grabbed hold of the cup with both hands, she was seized by security guards, who appeared to have had advanced warning of the protest.

They covered her with a sheet and took her off to a waiting police car.

The protest appeared to be the first action in a campaign against the championship by Femen which regularly stages bare-breast protests in Ukraine - and sometimes beyond - to highlight what it sees as political injustice, social abuse and the exploitation of women in Ukraine.
