Smedias 2012 - Vital info

Another year, another assault from the unruly world of studentdom on the corridors of mainstream media. As you might imagine, this takes some planning and action on the part of ourselves as organisers, and you as entrants. So read on and get ready for the Smedias 2012!

Step One: Categories

We have plenty of categories covering all aspects of student media, from the conventional Editor and Paper of the year awards to Radio, TV, Blogger of the Year, animation and web design. If you're active in media, there really is something for everyone. Check out the full list of categories here

Step Two: Registration

We poor folk in the Oxygen office have to handle literally hundreds of documents in the build up to Smedias 2012. It makes it easier for us and less likely that someone will slip through the cracks if we employ a pre-registration system. Every entry must be pre-registered by March 12. It only takes two minutes!

Once you've pre-registered you will be sent a link to the application form you must print and send in with your entries.

For any Smedias enquiries please call Oxygen on 01-6471540 or email smedias@oxygen.ie

Step Three: Actual Submissions

If you want your stuff to be judged, you must submit it to us by March 23 at 5pm, with the official application form. There is an administration fee of €12 per entry, with discounts available for bulk submissions.

Physical entries, submission forms and registration fees must be received by the above date and time in order to be entered into the 2012 Smedias. The same rule applies to alternative material for judgement, e.g. DVDs, websites etc. Check out the rules section for more info

Step Four: The Awards Ceremony!

The Awards ceremony will take place in The Ballsbridge Hotel (Formerly Jurys) on April 26 in Dublin. Stay tuned for further details including ticket information!

Topless Ukraine activist grabs Euro Cup

(Reuters) - A Ukrainian women's rights activist stripped to the waist and seized the Euro-2012 soccer trophy while it was on public display in Kiev on Saturday in a protest against the forthcoming month-long championship.

The young woman, 23-year-old Yulia Kovpachik, is a member of the Kiev-based Femen women's rights group which believes the Euro-2012 soccer tournament being played in Ukraine next month will encourage sex tourism.

Kovpachik strode up to the silver, 60 centimeter (two feet) high trophy, which was on display as a tourist attraction in an open air exhibition in central Kiev, ostensibly to be photographed alongside it like hundreds of other sightseers.

But she then pulled down her red T-shirt to reveal the words "Fuck Euro 2012" scrawled on her torso. As she grabbed hold of the cup with both hands, she was seized by security guards, who appeared to have had advanced warning of the protest.

They covered her with a sheet and took her off to a waiting police car.

The protest appeared to be the first action in a campaign against the championship by Femen which regularly stages bare-breast protests in Ukraine - and sometimes beyond - to highlight what it sees as political injustice, social abuse and the exploitation of women in Ukraine.
