Smedias 2009 Welcome
BAVNEWONE

With the help of our drink sponsor, Bavaria

130X130

Another year, another assault from the unruly world of studentdom on the corridors of mainstream media. As you might imagine, this takes some planning and action on the part of ourselves as organisers, and you as entrants. So read on and get ready for the 3 Smedias 2009!

Step One: Categories
We have plenty of categories covering all aspects of student media, from the conventional Editor and Paper of the year awards to the new multimedia awards, such as Short Animation Feature and Website of the year. If you're active in media, there really is something for everyone. Check out the full list of categories here

Step Two: Registration
We poor proles in the oxygen office have to handle literally hundreds of documents in the build up to the 2009 Smedias. It makes it easier for us and less likely that someone slip through the cracks if we employ a pre-registration system like last year. Every entry must be pre-resigtered by 27th February. To access the pre-registration form, click here. EDITORS PLEASE NOTE, DO NOT PRE-REGISTER ALL CONTRIBUTORS UNDER YOUR OWN NAME. IF YOU ARE DOING SO, PLEASE REGISTER THEM INDIVIDUALLY UNDER THEIR OWN NAME AND WITH THEIR OWN CONTACT DETAILS.

Step Three: Actual Submissions
People say print media is endangered species, but we beg to differ. No fancy shtuff here. If you want your stuff to be judged, you must submit it to us by the 6th of March at 5pm. There is an administration fee of €12 per entry, with discounts available for bulk submissions. Physical entries, submission forms and registration fees must be received by the above date and time in order to be entered into the 2009 Smedias. The same rule applies to alternative material for judgement, e.g. DVDs, websites etc. Check out the rules section for more info

Step Four: The Awards Ceremony!
Now for the fun part. This year Oxygen have organised a royal knees up in Dublins regal Mansion House on the 2nd of April. We look forward to pretending that we belong there. As usual, our judging list will be made up of the cream of the Irish media crop. Here's a look at last year's judges if you don't believe us!

Miami named most miserable U.S. city

(Reuters) - Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.

The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.

"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.

The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

Reeling for decades from the decline of the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's troubled duo of Detroit and Flint registered at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, among the most miserable cities.

"Detroit and Flint are struggling," said Badenhausen. "Violent crime is highest in the country in Detroit; housing prices are down 55 percent. Detroit is closing schools and laying off policemen. In recent years they have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes"

West Palm Beach, Florida and Sacramento, California rounded out the top five cities.

"We're trying to judge cities where residents have a lot of complaints. It doesn't mean that there aren't terrific things there," he said.

And for the haves Miami's charms remain undiminished.

"The one percent in Miami is doing fantastic. But for the vast majority, who make less than $75,000 (a year), Miami can be a challenging place," he said. "Forty-seven percent of homeowners sit on underwater mortgages. That's tough."
