Attention all student journalists, writers, editors, web-designers, animators, radio-makers, photgraphers, bloggers and camera-hogging vloggers, with the college year already well under way, we’re very excited to announce the return of the Smedias 2017!
The National Student Media Awards, or ‘Smedias’, are the biggest student media award ceremony in Ireland, very much the Oscars of the Irish student media world- but with greater racial diversity.
The ceremony will be held, for the third year running, in the needlessly decadent surroundings of the Aviva Stadium on April 6th, 2017. Last year’s show was MC’d by the wonderful Eoghan McDermott, and had in attendance such luminaries of the Irish media world as Marty Morrissey, Dave Fanning and Mark Hennessey; It’s truly a night to remember for those lucky enough to be nominated.
The awards provide a fantastic opportunity for aspiring media students to have their hard work recognised and brought to the attention of industry professionals, and, more importantly, is an excuse for an amazing night out! The Smedias After-Party, last year held in Sam’s Bar on Dawson Street was a night to make even circa 2011 Charlie Sheen blush.
With a record number of categories, as well as submissions from students last year, this year promises to be even bigger. We’re hoping that all of the categories from last year’s Smedias, which can be found here, will carry over to this year, and potentially a few new one as well! This year’s entry guidelines will, by and large, be similar to last year’s, so have a look at them for the moment if you’re planning on entering.
Keep an eye out on Oxygen.ie and on our dedicated Smedias Facebook page for updates about categories and entry guidelines as well as other fun news about Ireland’s best known and longest running student media awards show.
So, if you find yourself still reading this rather than scuttling off to sculpt whatever excellent nugget of media you may be working on; be it a column for a student newspaper, or a fantastic radio documentary or sketch show, well then what else are you waiting for!? Scram and get to it!
