The 2018 National Smedia Awards are fast approaching!

For the 18th year in a row, we’re once again celebrating the best that students have to offer in journalism, photography, film, TV, radio and more.

This year’s awards ceremony will once again be taking place in the Aviva Stadium, Donnybrook on the 20th of April, 2018.

The following is a full list of this year’s categories. You can click through to each one to find all of the relevant information you need when applying.

Journalism

European Commission Award

 

 

 

 

 

This year the European Commission Student media award competition will be awarded to the best article which covers EU affairs and which was printed in a student publication over the last 12 months.

The winning student will receive a Smedia award, a cash prize of €1,000 and publication in a regional or on-line newspaper.

RSA Award For Journalism On Road Safety

 

 

 

 

 

We are thrilled to have the RSA sponsoring such an important category for us once more.

Awarded to any form of media, be it written, published or broadcast on television, radio, internet or otherwise; highlighting the issue of Road Safety in Ireland. Please note that in the case of print entries you need only submit one written sample.

SFI Science Writer Of The Year

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Science Foundation of Ireland Award For Science Writer Of The Year will be awarded to any student who was written and published an article, in any form of student media, relating to science or technology.

If you’ve written on anything science-related, from the minutiae of a minor scientific discovery made at your college to a think-piece pondering the changing role of science in society through the centuries, we want to hear from you

Newspaper Of The Year

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the newspaper that sustains the highest quality of journalism, editorial standards, production values and overall professionalism despite budgetary and other limitations.

All entries for newspapers must come with a one page profile showing their resources and staff. It should state how many full time staff they have, how many of their staff are paid and if the paper is funded.

Magazine Of The Year

Awarded to one publication produced either as a once-off (e.g. rag mag) or regular publication. Open to any college magazine.

Small College Or Society Publication Of The Year

Awarded to the best newspaper, magazine or society publication produced by a Small College or Society.

Applications for small college publication, are only acceptable from colleges with 4,000 full-time students or less. Society Publication applications are open to any society publication.

Layout And Design Of The Year

Open to any publication produced in student media, awarded for innovative and intelligent creativity in design and layout.

Journalist Of The Year

 

 

 

Awarded to the best student journalist of the year reporting on news and current affairs. This can include campus, national and international news.

Judges will be looking for an ability to dig out original information and present it with imagination and style.

Journalist Of The Year – National Press

 

 

 

This award is open to students who have managed to get their work published in the national press during the academic year.

Features Writer Of The Year (News & Current Affairs)

 

 

Awarded to the best student features writer of the year covering news and current affairs. This can include campus, national and international news.

Judges will be looking for analytical skills and a fluent and compelling writing style

Features Writer Of The Year (Arts & Pop Culture)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best student features writer of the year writing about the arts or pop-culture.

Judges will be looking for entertaining, stylish, authoritative criticism, which offers a fresh, illuminating view of a performance, film, album or popular cultural topic

Colour Writer Of The Year

 

 

 

 

 

 

This is awarded to the finest writer of features with a particularly satirical slant and distinctly humourous tone. Imagination and wit are key.

Editor Of The Year

 

 

 

Awarded to the editor of any publication to show commitment, enthusiasm and editorial insight as reflected by the publication.

All entries for editors must come with a one page profile showing their resources and staff. It should state how many full time staff they have, how many of their staff are paid and if the paper is funded.

Sports Writer Of The Year

 

Awarded to the journalist producing the most consistently high quality sports writing over the course of the year.

Short Story Of The Year

Awarded to the most original, well-written work of short fiction. Stories should not exceed 4,000 words.

Applications can include published or unpublished material. Every applicant is however restricted to just one entry.

Photography

Photographer Of The Year

Awarded to one individual for an outstanding sample of photography (three photographs).

The judges will be looking for excellence in composition, subject matter and for startling images.

The work should either have been published in the student press OR be the work of a full-time student, in which case the work can be unpublished, but of publishable quality

News Photographer Of The Year

Awarded to the photographer best capturing news events and current affairs on camera.

The work should either have been published in the student press OR be the work of a full-time student, in which case the work can be unpublished, but of publishable quality

Sports Photographer Of The Year

Awarded to the photographer who has captured the most dynamic, creative and technically impressive pieces of sports photography.

The work should either have been published in the student press OR be the work of a full-time student, in which case the work can be unpublished, but of publishable quality

Radio

Radio Production Of The Year (News & Current Affairs)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best radio production covering news and current affairs.

This can include news broadcasts, panel discussions, interviews and other news and current affairs related shows. Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student radio.

Radio Production Of The Year (Arts & Features)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best radio production covering the arts, culture and entertainment.

This can include magazine shows, comedy programmes, drama, non-news documentary, arts coverage, interviews and all other arts, culture and entertainment shows. Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student radio.

Radio DJ(s) Of The Year

Awarded to the student(s) who present the best music show broadcast on student radio.

The show may also include chat and / or interview but some element of music is essential. Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student radio.

Radio Documentary Of The Year

Awarded to the best radio documentary production.

Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student radio.

Radio Journalist Of The Year

Awarded to the best student radio journalist of the year reporting on news and current affairs. This can include campus, national and international news.

Judges will be looking for an ability to dig out original information and present it with imagination and style. Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student radio.

Film & T.V.

T.V. Production Of The Year

Awarded to the best student TV production of the year.

This includes news, arts, and entertainment shows. Must be produced expressly for broadcast on student or campus television.

Short Film Of The Year

The Short Film of the Year will be awarded to the film that shows the greatest imagination and production values despite budgetary and other limitations.

Short Animation Of The Year

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best animation created by a student in Ireland since March 2nd, 2017. Finalists will be shown on the night and hosted on the Oxygen.ie website.

Must be produced expressly as part of a student project or for student broadcast. Entries must be under 3 minutes in length.

Film Script Of The Year

Awarded to the best animation created by a student in Ireland since March 2nd, 2017. Finalists will be shown on the night and hosted on the Oxygen.ie website.

Must be produced expressly as part of a student project or for student broadcast. Entries must be under 3 minutes in length. 

Web

Blog/Vlog Of The Year

The award for Blog/Vlog of the Year will be presented to the third level student who combines incisive writing, creative use of images and design and regular output to build a compelling blog, or to the third level student who combines creative and insightful ideas into distinguished video blogs.

Website Of The Year

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best maintained, frequently updated, user-friendly and informative website. Students’ Union sites, clubs and societies homepages and college news sites are all welcome.

People’s Choice Award

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The People’s Choice Award is the only Smedia to be chosen, not by judges, but by a popular vote. It is open to all college publications; any person significantly involved in their college; any radio or tv station; or any student society who wish to enter.

Irish

Journalist Of The Year – Iriseoireacht Scríofa

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best student journalist of the year reporting on Irish news and current affairs. This can include Irish campus, national and international news.

Judges will be looking for an ability to dig out original information and present it with imagination and style.

Raidió Trí Ghaeilge

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the best radio production through Irish. This can include news broadcasts, panel discussions, interviews, music show, and other news and current affairs related shows.

Can be produced for broadcast on student, local or national radio but must not be for paid work or professionally assisted.

Léiriúcháin Teilifíse I Ngaeilge- Faisnéis Agus Drámaíocht

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Awarded to the T.V. production in Irish, documentary or drama, created by a student in Ireland.

Finalists will be shown on the night and hosted on the Oxygen.ie website. Must be produced expressly as part of a student project or for student broadcast.
