The Smedias have a long history of attracting some of the finest comedy talent in Ireland to host the event and this year will be no exception. We are thrilled to announce that the one and only* Kevin McGahern will be the MC of this year’s National Student Media Awards.

Kevin is a natural fit for the night. Having first taken to the stage as a stand-up in 2009, the young Cavan native already has a much acclaimed, and rapidly growing, body of work to his name; not to mention an actual body that can largely be described as ‘enviable’. It was not long after beginning his pursuit of a career in comedy that he became a regular on Irish television.

He first came to national attention as the character ‘Simcard’ on the wildly successful RTÉ 2 series The Hardy Bucks. His assault on our national consciousness had only begun though, and Kevin was soon regularly appearing in sketches in the hit Republic Of Telly before going on to become one of the show’s hosts, and, in 2015, becoming the sole main host of the show.

In tandem to his glittering comedy career he has most recently created a mini-series for RTÉ entitled Kevin McGahern’s America where he harvested comedy gold from travelling round the increasingly troubled nation. It was in 2015 however that he made his first foray into his hilarious yet candid style of documentary presenting, fronting a show called Kevin McGahern’s Fast & Furious, a scene from which can be seen below. We highly recommend you check out more of his work, if you’re somehow unfamiliar with it, as it is consistently brilliant.

Kevin’s laid-back, yet engaging style of presenting, which he has honed over the years, will be a perfect fit for the night, and he will undoubtedly be the star that makes the whole event shine.

*There may be more than one man named Kevin McGahern in existence; there will however be only one Kevin McGahern on the night.**

**This is not to imply that anyone attending of the same name will be refused entry. Such a policy would be churlish.
