J1 Summer - The Importance of Shopping Around

Save money later!

It’s, oh such an important rule, yet so many of us jump into the J1 summer without even thinking about it. You may think it is a lot of effort now, but when you are six weeks into a J1 and are down to your last pingins, price comparison shopping could be a pain you will look back on with a feel of deep seated anxiety and dread. So, our advice is, do the work now to save money later.

It’s the time of year when all of the prospective J1er’s are booking their visas and securing their flights. But, how do you know you are getting the best deal out there? In most of the universities and colleges in Ireland, there is some form of J1 advice office or agency to help you decide; first tip is to make sure that these advisors are not affiliated with any of the major J1 pedalling companies, as you won’t get the full story.

J1 Summers are what you make them

What you should do is compare; take the time to look around and you will see that the different agencies offering J1’s have varied price plans and packages, depending on what you want from your summer.

Broadly speaking, there are three main agencies that students will book with this summer. They are Go4Less, Sayit and USIT. It depends on what you are looking for of course, but, as a rule USIT get the majority of student business. The reason for this is not certain, but a lot of it could boil down to reliability and people trusting in the name. That’s all fine, but be aware that the other two companies are also completely legitimate and have sent thousands of students to America every summer for years.

A couple of things: Firstly, USIT are notoriously the most expensive company to travel with to the states. I personally travelled with them for the simple reason that there was a big USIT office right down the road from the college. Nice and handy. Unfortunately, it did cost me a pretty penny for the convenience. At the minute, there are some really good offers out there, so my advice is to PLEASE shop around before jumping into the proverbial bed with the first convenient partner.

Check Visa comparison prices!

Today’s Hot Tips

USIT and Go4Less are both offering a super cheap programme fee of 99euro at the minute, but they are only running it until this weekend so book fast! If you can’t though, Sayit are running a programme fee of 95euro which seems to have no time limitation! Sweet!

One really cool thing that is being offered at the minute is an interest free loan to take the hassle out of your travel. USIT and Go4Less are both offering this and it seem like a pretty cool way to get away and worry later, huh?

Another really good part of the J1 at the minute is exam repeat emergency insurance and free stopovers. Check this out as it does vary between companies and there are some really good deals out there.

The most important thing to look at when you are price comparing is to remember that the flights are going to be the bulk of the cost. Make sure you are getting a good deal on flights and remember there are other ways of getting flights than through the visa agency, you can even search online on sites that advertise cheap flights and get amazing deals, saving up to hundreds on your trip. Sounds good to me!

Miami named most miserable U.S. city

(Reuters) - Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.

The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.

"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.

The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

Reeling for decades from the decline of the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's troubled duo of Detroit and Flint registered at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, among the most miserable cities.

"Detroit and Flint are struggling," said Badenhausen. "Violent crime is highest in the country in Detroit; housing prices are down 55 percent. Detroit is closing schools and laying off policemen. In recent years they have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes"

West Palm Beach, Florida and Sacramento, California rounded out the top five cities.

"We're trying to judge cities where residents have a lot of complaints. It doesn't mean that there aren't terrific things there," he said.

And for the haves Miami's charms remain undiminished.

"The one percent in Miami is doing fantastic. But for the vast majority, who make less than $75,000 (a year), Miami can be a challenging place," he said. "Forty-seven percent of homeowners sit on underwater mortgages. That's tough."
