IT Tralee College Guide
ITT120A

What is your locale like?
Our main student venue in Tralee is Horans night club, it is the place to be seen when on a night out in college. Just fully refurbished has great DJ’s including our very own SU president Peter “Bella” Doyle. It’s always a guaranteed great night out.

What's your city/town like?
Tralee is a buzzing town, with a great home away from home feel about it. With plenty of friendly people and plenty of amenities there’s a lot to do.

What's the vibe like?
There’s a great vibe around Tralee, especially here in the college where every looks out for one another and makes sure everyone has the time of our life’s here.

AQUADOME200

Is there a lot to do there?
Here in Tralee we have plenty of extracurricular activities like the Aqua Dome water-park, everything from Judo to Basketball to Rugby etc, and of course all GAA sports. In the town we also have a Paint balling facility, gyms, indoor soccer, snooker halls, dog track, horse racing and many more, so a lot to do around the town.

Is it easy to get around?
Yes, very easy, Tralee has both a Bus and a train station so getting here is not hard. In the town there is a bus which runs all around the landmarks of the town including our two campuses, every where is very reachable by foot and for the tired feet, taxis are just a phone call away which are very cheap here in Tralee.

Is it a fairly safe place to live?
Yes, very safe. Like anywhere in Ireland nowadays you have to be careful late at night. But IT Tralee will be here to alert you to the dangers, and we work very close with An Garda Siochana to help prevent any incidents.

TRALEEIT200A

What are campus facilities like?
We have just opened a brand new fully floodlit GAA pitch and fully floodlit all weather pitch for the purpose of all students to use. We have state of the art computer facilities in both of our campuses and excellent equipment for all of our courses. In September, our running track will be
completed just in time to shake off those extra holiday pounds.

Is there easy access to computers, library and photocopying?
Yes, we have ample computer labs which can be used throughout the whole day. The Libraries we have on both of our campuses have very respectable opening hours and those hours are increased during exam times. A new state of the art library is currently been developed as we speak.

Is there a bank on-campus?
Yes, there is. Our college is divided into two campuses and we have two ank of Ireland banks, one in each campus along with two ATM machines.

Is there a Student Health Centre? How good is it?
Yes,there is a student health centre, with excellent facilities for all student needs, which has a very warm and helpful staff, with an onsite nrse and doctor and student counsellor.

TRALEEIT200B

What is the canteen and campus eateries like?
With very friendly staff nice homely food and at very reasonable prices, our canteens are one of the main places students gather for a chat.

What kind of sports facilities are there?
In the last year we have opened a state of the art fully floodlit all weather pitch and adjacent to this we have a brand new GAA pitch also fully floodlit and a new running track will also be opened in September. We also have fully equipped gym which is open to all students and the sports complex beside the college is also opened to all students which has a swimming pool, gym, indoor soccer, tennis and basketball courts.

What kind of clubs and societies can students join?
We have a very big GAA club here in the college as well as soccer, rugby, basketball, hockey and swimming etc. We have musical and drama societies and many more.

Have you been involved in any? How well would you rate the experience?
Yes, I have been very involved with the Hurling and Camogie clubs for the past couple of years. I would rate it is the single best thing I did in the college it’s where I met most of my friends who have the same interests as me. It’s a great way of meeting new people and enjoying your
college.

TRALEEIT200C

What are the cinemas like around your college?
We have one cinema with fours screens, currently a new eight screen cinema is being built and during Fresher’s Week we have a portable cinema arriving into college showing the latest releases.

What's accommodation like? How expensive is it?
Accommodation is excellent with 5 brand new student villages all with broadband internet in your room. If you’re not into student villages we have plenty of houses in the near area which are rented out to students and digs are also available. Tralee is known as nearly the cheapest student accommodation in Ireland so the cost is minimal to the student and the parents. An average, rent is between €50-€55 a week. Included in this price would be a single room, en-suite bathroom and broadband facilities.

Is it easy to find a part-time job? Are there any places with a good
reputation for hiring students?

There is plenty of work out there in Tralee in local hotels, bars and restraints. There is also a large shopping centre which has loads of
companies that will need part time workers.

What's the "worst thing" a new student at your college can do?
The worst thing a student can do in our college in my eyes is not to get involved in any of our clubs or societies. This is the main way to meet
new people and get new friends.

TRALEEIT200D

What's "the best?"
The nightlife in Tralee for students is excellent here in the students' union we toil incessantly to organise the best nights out the ones you remember and cherish.

What advice would you offer new students?
Enjoy college, it will be the best time of your life. Get involved in everything but don’t forget about the books, that’s the reason you’re here!

In what way do you think your college is superior to others' in the
country/its rivals?

Some people think that because IT Tralee is a small college then it’s not as good as all the rest, I think the opposite, here everyone gets to know everyone, students and lecturers alike any problems be them big or small, there’s always someone to solve them for you. When you come to Tralee you just don’t get a degree you get friends and great memories for life.

Miami named most miserable U.S. city

(Reuters) - Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.

The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.

"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.

The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

Reeling for decades from the decline of the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's troubled duo of Detroit and Flint registered at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, among the most miserable cities.

"Detroit and Flint are struggling," said Badenhausen. "Violent crime is highest in the country in Detroit; housing prices are down 55 percent. Detroit is closing schools and laying off policemen. In recent years they have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes"

West Palm Beach, Florida and Sacramento, California rounded out the top five cities.

"We're trying to judge cities where residents have a lot of complaints. It doesn't mean that there aren't terrific things there," he said.

And for the haves Miami's charms remain undiminished.

"The one percent in Miami is doing fantastic. But for the vast majority, who make less than $75,000 (a year), Miami can be a challenging place," he said. "Forty-seven percent of homeowners sit on underwater mortgages. That's tough."
