Desination Guide - New York

Times Square :)

If you think you have seen New York, from spending a family holiday in the city that never sleeps, you better think again!

A J1 to the Big Apple might seem like a million miles away from the beach hoppin’ J1 that is appealing to so many rain trodden Irish students, but rest assured, this is a J1 experience that beats the OC any day!

Flights to New York are actually very reasonable and you will be better served to look around before committing to anything with any of the major visa companies! This is where shoppin around comes into play!

Get Fashionable for a game!

New York has everything, and everything starts with shopping (and I mean really good shopping, you will come home with a boasting wardrobe that will make your hippy beach buddy friends drool at the lip.).

The amount of choice in the city still amazes me and I have been there three times now! The best thing about shopping in New York is that you have the choice of everything from the highest of couture on Fifth Avenue (think Sex and the City) to the best bargains at Century21 down by Battery Park.

Then there is everything in between, from Hollister (which is the secret of the city and is down in Soho for anyone who questions its existence) to the standard Abercrombie and Fitch and American Eagle. For girls, the Victoria’s Secret is second to none; just across from Macy’s, you will feel like eating the shop with all the amazing fragrances wafting through the racks of delectable lingerie. A word of warning on Abercrombie; the one on Fifth is fabulous and you should go in just to get the nightclub during the oh so sexy day feeling, but for actual purchasing I would recommend heading down to the Village as you will get some really great bargains on the same stuff.

The famous Statue of Liberty

While you are in New York, there are touristy things that you just need to do. A trip to Ellis Island is one of the nicest things you can do while you are there, it gives you a really great connection to the city.

The museum of the city of New York is spectacular, it is one o the forgotten gems of the city and traces a beautiful history of Manhattan. If you can, take in a Sunday mass at St Patrick’s cathedral on Fifth; it is an experience of the mass that you have never had before.

I did the Empire State on New Year’s day which was really special but it’s definitely worth doing any day of the week. A walk around battery park and ground zero is surreal but worth a look.

Ellis Island

Living in New York is really expensive so keep this in mind if you plan on spending the summer there. Your best bet is to check before you go as a lot of families move out of the city heat to the Hamptons for the summer so they rent their apartments out. Just make sure you have decent references if you are going to do this!

If you want the beach, then you are lucky enough to have the Hamptons and Breezy Point literally a boat ride away. The heat of the city can et to be a bit much after a while so going to the beach for the day is really appealing and really not that far! Make friends with people living on the beach and you will be tanning the summer away!

Topless Ukraine activist grabs Euro Cup

(Reuters) - A Ukrainian women's rights activist stripped to the waist and seized the Euro-2012 soccer trophy while it was on public display in Kiev on Saturday in a protest against the forthcoming month-long championship.

The young woman, 23-year-old Yulia Kovpachik, is a member of the Kiev-based Femen women's rights group which believes the Euro-2012 soccer tournament being played in Ukraine next month will encourage sex tourism.

Kovpachik strode up to the silver, 60 centimeter (two feet) high trophy, which was on display as a tourist attraction in an open air exhibition in central Kiev, ostensibly to be photographed alongside it like hundreds of other sightseers.

But she then pulled down her red T-shirt to reveal the words "Fuck Euro 2012" scrawled on her torso. As she grabbed hold of the cup with both hands, she was seized by security guards, who appeared to have had advanced warning of the protest.

They covered her with a sheet and took her off to a waiting police car.

The protest appeared to be the first action in a campaign against the championship by Femen which regularly stages bare-breast protests in Ukraine - and sometimes beyond - to highlight what it sees as political injustice, social abuse and the exploitation of women in Ukraine.

Femen says Euro-2012, which Ukraine is co-hosting with Poland next month with the final in Kiev on July 1, will be a magnet for sex tourists - one of the group's main targets - and will feed a booming sex industry.

About one million foreign tourists are expected in Ukraine for the Euros.

Organisers said the 8 kg (17 lbs) Henri Delaunay cup was undamaged though Kovpachik appeared to topple back under its weight as security guards seized her. It was still on show in late evening.

Femen's spokeswoman, Anna Gutsol, said Kovpachik, who staged the protest on her 23rd birthday, was released after being told she would have to appear in court on Monday on a charge of hooliganism. The charge carries a maximum fine of 800 hryvnias ($100) and 15 days detention.

Conscious of Ukraine's growing reputation as a new destination for sex tourism, Euro-2012 organisers say they are taking steps to curb prostitution during the month-long tournament.

After Kovpachik's protest, Femen activist Olexandra Shevchenko told reporters: "We came here today to stop this Euro fan low-life from making a bordello out of Ukraine."

City authorities have mounted the trophy in a temporary exhibition area on Kiev's Independence Square.

Hundreds of sightseers were queuing up under the blazing sun for souvenir photographs alongside it when Kovpachik staged her demonstration.

Independence Square itself will be the centre of a huge 'fan-zone' during Euro-2012, capable of holding tens of thousands of football supporters.
