City Breaks - Edinburgh

The famous castle

Edinburgh is probably most famous for bagpipes, tartan and the comedy festival held every August, but its got loads to offer at any time of the year.

Getting There
Both Ryanair and Aer Lingus fly to Edinburgh. The airport is really close to the city which is really handy if you’re only going for a few days. It only takes 25 minutes to get a bus to the city centre and it costs just £6 return. The city centre is easy to get around on foot. Taxis never
cost us more than £5, which makes a refreshing change from Dublin prices.

Price's St. Garden

Accommodation

There are loads of hostels in the city, but they fill up really fast. Having left the booking to the last minute most of the popular hostels were gone. We stayed in the Backpackers Hostel on Cockburn Street. It had a fantastic location but the hostel itself was quite basic, I’ve definitely stayed in nicer ones. For £35 for three nights though, it was great value. Check out hostelworld.com for reviews and ratings.

The Sights

We went on the Sandemans walking tour. It’s a good way toget your bearings and see the main tourist attractions. The three-hour tours depart from Starbucks on the High Street every day at 11 am and 1pm.They cover the Castle, the Royal Mile, GreyfriarsCemetery and Prince’s Street Gardens, the park in the middle of the city. Tourist attractions worth paying into are the castle and the camera obscura, a cross between a camera and a periscope. It’s hard to explain until you see it, but trust me it’s really cool.

One of edinburgh's nice little pubs

Although our guide was a little on the irritating side she did tell us a lot of very interesting factsabout the city, and seeing as the tour was free we couldn’t really complain. They also offer a ghost tour at nine o’clock every night, which takes in some of the cities many supposedly haunted areas. Sadly we decided to go for the pub crawl instead (see below) but if I was going back I’d definitely check it out.

Going Out

The Sandemans’ pub crawl costs £9 and included a free pint, three free shots and entry into an “exclusive” nightclub. While it was fun (possibly something to do with the free drink) the venues were really touristy, especially the nightclub Espionage. If hen and stag parties aren’t your thing it’s probably best to give it a miss.

That said the pub crawl introduced us to Whistle Binkies, a cosy little pub that has really cool live music. It’s just across from The Tron restauarant but there’s no obvious sign so just ask in the restaurant and I’m sure they’ll point you in the right direction.

The Royal Mile

Eating Out

Food in Edinburgh is around the same price as Dublin, maybe slightly cheaper. For a nice lunch, or for some home made pastries and muffins, you should check out Hula, located in the Grassmarket.

Anyone looking for cheap and tasty dinners should try The Tron, located on the Royal Mile just behind the Tron Kirk. You can get a meal and a pint of cider or beer for only £3.95 or two meals for £6. Bella Italia, on the Royal Mile and Viva Mexico, on Cockburn Street, both serve delicious food.

Edinburgh- cheap food, cheap drink, cool pubs and a castle, what more could you want?

Miami named most miserable U.S. city

(Reuters) - Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.

The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.

"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.

The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

Reeling for decades from the decline of the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's troubled duo of Detroit and Flint registered at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, among the most miserable cities.

"Detroit and Flint are struggling," said Badenhausen. "Violent crime is highest in the country in Detroit; housing prices are down 55 percent. Detroit is closing schools and laying off policemen. In recent years they have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes"

West Palm Beach, Florida and Sacramento, California rounded out the top five cities.

"We're trying to judge cities where residents have a lot of complaints. It doesn't mean that there aren't terrific things there," he said.

And for the haves Miami's charms remain undiminished.

"The one percent in Miami is doing fantastic. But for the vast majority, who make less than $75,000 (a year), Miami can be a challenging place," he said. "Forty-seven percent of homeowners sit on underwater mortgages. That's tough."
