Church and retailers announce recession Xmas offers
Linking to Church and retailers announce recession Xmas offers

Irish parents will be breathing a sigh of relief with news of a stop-gap Christmas problem solver.

'Santy-Saviours'
, a moneylenders turned rental outfit, are plugging themselves as parents' answer to circumvent the recession, by offering toys on fortnightly rental.

Ed Smatcher, a German mogul expat living in Athlone, is the entrepreneur behind the venture.

''This is not about money for me,'' explained Herr Smatcher.
''Like all Good Germans, I invested wisely during the boom years, exercising spendthrift as a general rule.
I see how desperate the Irish people have become; there is even talk of killing off Herr Santa Clause because people do not have the Marks to buy presents. I have the solution.''

''You come to my toy market. All toys are available on short term lease for up to two weeks. You tell little boys and girls to keep toys safe in house, and after two weeks you return to me. You tell little boys and girls toys were taken by a thief in the night. It's a win-win situation: the little children get their Santa toys, and you pay fraction of real price.

Of course there are risks inherent to the rental game : if toy is damaged when we come to collect, we take item of corresponding value, like your car.''

Another ''industry'' set for change is the much-maligned Church. In an effort to combat dwindling mass attendances nationwide, in the run up to Christmas the Church has decided to allow alcohol to be served at mass, in a move entitled ''Alcohol Inclusive''.
Alcohol menus will be given out before the mass commences with Pint bottles of Cider and naggins of Vodka set to be the biggest sellers. Ushers will be moonlighting as barmen, serving in between the first reading and the Gospel, and collecting glasses during the cash collection.
Students across the country are rejoicing at the move as the “longest half hour of your life” will now pass quicker with the advent of alcohol and will allow them to get the cure after the previous night’s antics.
One student who is dragged to mass every Sunday against his will and despite being an atheist says he will now enthusiastically attend mass because he can “black out” with over indulgence of Bulmers.
The church hopes that they can lure the youth of Ireland back to mass and then keep them attending through more interactive and interesting sermons while eventually phasing out the alcohol.

Regular church goers who have an average age of 70 are said to be outraged at the move as the sacred words of the priest will be interrupted by the sound of vomit and random football chants.
The first night of Alcohol Inclusive mass across the country will be on Christmas Eve and it will definitely not be boring as there will now be skirts, beer and maybe a fight or two.

Topless Ukraine activist grabs Euro Cup

(Reuters) - A Ukrainian women's rights activist stripped to the waist and seized the Euro-2012 soccer trophy while it was on public display in Kiev on Saturday in a protest against the forthcoming month-long championship.

The young woman, 23-year-old Yulia Kovpachik, is a member of the Kiev-based Femen women's rights group which believes the Euro-2012 soccer tournament being played in Ukraine next month will encourage sex tourism.

Kovpachik strode up to the silver, 60 centimeter (two feet) high trophy, which was on display as a tourist attraction in an open air exhibition in central Kiev, ostensibly to be photographed alongside it like hundreds of other sightseers.

But she then pulled down her red T-shirt to reveal the words "Fuck Euro 2012" scrawled on her torso. As she grabbed hold of the cup with both hands, she was seized by security guards, who appeared to have had advanced warning of the protest.

They covered her with a sheet and took her off to a waiting police car.

The protest appeared to be the first action in a campaign against the championship by Femen which regularly stages bare-breast protests in Ukraine - and sometimes beyond - to highlight what it sees as political injustice, social abuse and the exploitation of women in Ukraine.

Femen says Euro-2012, which Ukraine is co-hosting with Poland next month with the final in Kiev on July 1, will be a magnet for sex tourists - one of the group's main targets - and will feed a booming sex industry.

About one million foreign tourists are expected in Ukraine for the Euros.

Organisers said the 8 kg (17 lbs) Henri Delaunay cup was undamaged though Kovpachik appeared to topple back under its weight as security guards seized her. It was still on show in late evening.

Femen's spokeswoman, Anna Gutsol, said Kovpachik, who staged the protest on her 23rd birthday, was released after being told she would have to appear in court on Monday on a charge of hooliganism. The charge carries a maximum fine of 800 hryvnias ($100) and 15 days detention.

Conscious of Ukraine's growing reputation as a new destination for sex tourism, Euro-2012 organisers say they are taking steps to curb prostitution during the month-long tournament.

After Kovpachik's protest, Femen activist Olexandra Shevchenko told reporters: "We came here today to stop this Euro fan low-life from making a bordello out of Ukraine."

City authorities have mounted the trophy in a temporary exhibition area on Kiev's Independence Square.

Hundreds of sightseers were queuing up under the blazing sun for souvenir photographs alongside it when Kovpachik staged her demonstration.

Independence Square itself will be the centre of a huge 'fan-zone' during Euro-2012, capable of holding tens of thousands of football supporters.
