Avatar Review

After fifteen years of waiting for technology to catch up and four years of production, James Cameron’s vision has finally been realised.

It has been nominated for four Golden Globes, including Best Director-Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture-Drama and, after only three weeks at the box office, became the second highest grossing film of all time.

Avatar is an epic tale of adventure, with special effects like you’ve never seen. This is science fiction with a difference.

The action takes place on Pandora, a moon light years from Earth, with an atmosphere toxic to non natives. It is 2154 and as Earth has used up most of its own resources, the minerals on Pandora have become extremely valuable.

Hostility grows, as the area the multinational company wish to mine is colonised by the alien life form that inhabits Pandora, the Na’vi. To create better relations with the natives and research this new planet, scientists have developed the Avatar programme, which links human consciousness to beings created using both human and Na’vi DNA.

Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a former marine who has lost the use of his legs, is given the chance to take the place of his dead brother on the programme. However, as Jake admits, his brother was the scientist and he quickly forms alliances with the military unit supporting the work of the miners.

The story that follows is one of a personal rediscovery as Jake finds strength in his new body and his new world. Taken in by the Na’vi, to learn their way of life, he forms a strong bond with his reluctant teacher, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).

As their relationship develops, Jake is torn between his loyalty to his new tribe and the military unit he has been feeding information about the location of the minerals. His hopes to establish trust between the humans and the Na’vi, in order to negotiate a deal between the two, are shattered as ruthless Colonel Quaritich, played by Stephen Lang, and his team grow impatient. The threat of war is imminent and the future of Pandora lies in the balance.

New comer Sam Worthington, who was considered for the role of James Bond in Casino Royal, is both interesting and convincing as the main protagonist. It also helps that he is incredibly easy on the eye.

His curious, headstrong character gets him into trouble but is the reason the Na’vi agree to take him in. Performances by Zoe Saldana, Jake’s avatar love interest, Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine and Michelle Rodriguez as a fearless and sexy fighter pilot also add to the momentum of the film.

The plot is a little clichéd and the ending is certainly predictable. This is a story we have seen over and over again, the difference is, the amazing setting and effects. And they, will definitely not disappoint. It really is a beautiful film to watch and the magic of Pandora, filled with spiritual rainforests, floating mountains and exotic creatures, is incredibly engaging.

Watching Neytiri and Jake swoop through the air on winged dinosaur like creatures is particularly exhilarating in 3D. With effects like this the simple storyline fades into the background and you are left to just enjoy the experience. Avatar has all the elements of a fairytale, with a good dose of action thrown in.

Miami named most miserable U.S. city

(Reuters) - Warm sun, white beaches, and million-dollar mansions notwithstanding, Miami has captured the dubious distinction of being the most miserable city in the United States, according to a new poll.

The playground of the rich and famous is home to a crippling housing crisis, one of the highest crime rates in the country, and lengthy daily commutes for workers, all of which have propelled it to the No. 1 position in the Forbes.com list.

"Miami has sun and beautiful weather but other things make people miserable. You have this two-tier society: glitzy South Beach attracts celebrities, but the income inequality has skyrocketed in recent years," explained Forbes Senior Editor Kurt Badenhausen.

The rankings are based on factors including jobless rates, violent crime, foreclosures, income and property taxes, as well as considerations like weather, commute time and political corruption.

Reeling for decades from the decline of the U.S. auto industry, Michigan's troubled duo of Detroit and Flint registered at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, among the most miserable cities.

"Detroit and Flint are struggling," said Badenhausen. "Violent crime is highest in the country in Detroit; housing prices are down 55 percent. Detroit is closing schools and laying off policemen. In recent years they have been demolishing houses to change their city landscapes"

West Palm Beach, Florida and Sacramento, California rounded out the top five cities.

"We're trying to judge cities where residents have a lot of complaints. It doesn't mean that there aren't terrific things there," he said.

And for the haves Miami's charms remain undiminished.

"The one percent in Miami is doing fantastic. But for the vast majority, who make less than $75,000 (a year), Miami can be a challenging place," he said. "Forty-seven percent of homeowners sit on underwater mortgages. That's tough."
